Happy Thursday, Families!

Next week will be a very exciting week!

We will start our next Science unit, WHEELS AND LEVERS!  Through lab-based activities, we will learn about the basic components of simple machines.  We will transfer motion using levers, gears, pulleys and drive systems.  We will build and examine, predict and conclude, and have fun!  Do you know a lot about this area?  Would you like to come and talk to us about the transfer and speed of motion in some sort of way?  I'd love to hear from you!  Please send me an email!  Also, this is a great time for kids to show off their knowledge and building skills in this area.  Does your child have a whole room of their creations and would love to share it with us?  Woohoo!  That's super awesome!

*****Please have your child send in a shoe box with their name on it BEFORE Feb 7.  We need it for building a car!

***Would you be able to volunteer in our class on the afternoon of Feb 12, 13 or 15?  I would love some adults to help me cut cardboard with exacto knives and use a hot glue gun!  These will be our car-building days!  I'm hoping we get all of the cutting and glueing done on the 12 and 13, but I'm not too sure at this point!  Please send me an email if you are able to help out for an hour, from 1-2:00 on these days!

In LA/SS/ART:  We will start our writing part of SS:  turning our information about perspectives into well-written paragraphs and beautiful visual journals using various artistic techniques.

I'm also hoping to start the kids with "Book Club," so see updates about that.  I'm hoping for Monday, this may be in the next one or two weeks though.  Book Club is during "Daily Five" time, where kids get to read a novel and chat about it with kids who are at similar reading levels as them.  Several kids will also start a spelling club during "Word Work" time!

Math:  We have been studying multiplication, division, and when to recognize what to do when there is a problem.  On Monday, kids will get a little pre assessment so we may collaboratively group them into similar levels, so they may get the intervention/practice/enrichment that they need.  Through this way, we will learn the next part about Multiplying and Dividing:  2-digit by 1-digit facts.  For example, they will learn how to do a question like 43X3.  I hope the multiplication fact practice is going well!  We will also start doing some speed stuff, not for marks, but for data analysis (we will create a bar graph of our growth) and being proud of personal growth with speed and accuracy!  Hopefully we'll start that very soon!

Cool things:

No School tomorrow for kids!

Our new SPARK is starting on Feb 2!  Please ask your child what SPARK they will be in.

We have an AUTHOR VISIT on FEB 1 at 1:00pm: Michael Wade, author of "And Then it Happened" series.  Each book has several funny stories that can be read in less than five minutes.  you can visit www.boysbookshelf.com for some sample stories.  Students will have the opportunity to purchase signed books at the presentation for the special price of $5.00 each incl. GST, or the entire collection of 13 books for $40.00 incl. GST. Please make cheques payable to Books for Boys Inc. or bring cash. Parents are welcome to attend.  I can't even tell you how excited I am about this, my own children will love these!

Did you know the grade 4/5 ski trip is coming up fast?  It will be on Monday, Feb 5, and the bus will leave EARLY!  Something like 7:30, I'll have confirmed for sure times next week.  Skiers also don't get back until 4 or 4:30.  Watch here for info!

Oh my, I've typed a lot!  I bet I've forgotten something too.  I hope you all have a great weekend!
