Hi Families of 1P,

We had a busy first week back at school! We are getting back into the swing of things and adjusting back to our routine.

This week we began working on literacy centers and next week we will be starting a new literacy routine. This will involve students beginning to work independently while I work with small reading groups. We also finished all of our letter sounds for our Lively Letters program. We will now begin to start to build words and continuing on with the program. In writing, we have been using a visible thinking routine called "I see, I think, I wonder...". We have been looking at pictures from National Geographic and discussing the picture as a class and with partners. Students are then given 20 minutes to write about the picture using "I see" "I think" and "I wonder" as sentence starters. Students are expected to write the whole time and we have became quite the class of writers now. As most of the class now know all of their sight words, I will now be introducing a new list of sight words, which is below:

all, am, are, at, ate, by, black, brown, but, came, did, do, eat, four, get, good, have, he, into, like, must, new, no, now, on, our, out, please, pretty, ran, ride, saw, say, she, so, soon, that, there, they, this, too, under, want, was, well, went, what, white, who, will, with, yes.

Just a reminder to keep on reading at home! A lot of us have come quite a long way in our reading and we want to keep that up! There is a problem with RazKids and I am in the process of changing login information to solve this problem! I will have it done over the weekend hopefully!

In math, we have began to work on addition, counting to 100, skip counting by 5's and 10's. These are just skills that we will continue to work on for the rest of the year as they require a lot of time to pick up. We are still continuing patterns and I am hoping to wrap that unit up in the next couple weeks and we will then be moving onto 2D and 3D shapes.

In social studies, we have been talking about being a good group member (what does that look like, sound like etc.) and why groups are important. We will begin to transfer that knowledge into actual group activities. We have also been talking about communities, what communities they belong to and what a community has.

I sent home book orders this week and they will be due on January 19th. We will be beginning our building unit soon in science so if you could start to collect boxes, rolls, jars, etc. and send them in that would be much appreciated!

Have a great weekend and stay warm!
