Happy Friday, Families!
We have been working away at learning about the Metis: We are learning about the aspects of their life, and how the land was important to them. We listened to the national anthem and we listened to some music, like the Red River Jig. A few kids were absent yesterday, so they are bringing home their SS duotangs to read some of the pages. Please ensure SS comes back on Monday!
We have been learning about multiplication: Have your child make a small goal for themselves, to memorize a few multiplication facts a week! Maybe next week, they could memorize all of the 2xtables! (They hopefully remember them from last year!)
We have made Adding/subtracting goals: Some kids would like to continue practicing with regrouping. Some would like to work on their speed. A great website to help generate worksheets for home is:
This site also had multiplication and division sheets as well! It's great to practice skills.
We have been working on the structure of an essay. Kids finished these today, they'll get feedback next week from me!
We learned about the differences between the words WERE, WHERE and WE'RE. Some kids are needing to finish that at home this weekend!
Kids have been practicing reading to each other with content about the Metis and the Fur Trade! This will continue next week. Are you Metis? Would you be willing to come in and share some information or stories? We would LOVE to hear from you! Please email me if this is a possibility! email@example.com.
Yesterday, kids brought home their rubric from the Light and Shadows unit. They also brought home their "Circles and Stars" multiplication booklets. I gave them homework: To explain to you about the Circles and Stars: To explain what Multiplication is!
We made New Years Resolutions! Please ask your child what their resolution was!
We will continue to understand the perspective differences between the Immigrants, First Nations and the Metis.
We will start with division, and learn about the two together.
We will continue our practice with words, reading and writing.
We will continue goal-setting in Writing.
Scholastic came home today. Due this next Friday!
Jan 26 is a PD day, no school for kids!
FOWSS meeting on Wednesday night. Please see below about FOWSS:
We are FOWSS (Friends of Okotoks Westmount School Society) and we just want to introduce ourselves to you! We are the ones who raise money so school isn’t so expensive for parents! Our committee began with the need to fundraise for the school playground which our kids enjoy today.
Last year, our fundraising efforts profited:
- $1,537.50 from the Rebel Bean Coffee Fundraiser; $4,043.64 from the Westmount Howler; $52, 545.93 from the casino (done in Spring 2016, THIS IS OUR MAIN SOURCE OF MONEY.
Last year, thanks to the proceeds from the Casino fundraiser, we distributed $22,934.21 to fund:
- trophies and plaques, phys-ed equipment, Rocks and Rings Curling program, In-school speakers (PAC and Astronomy), library books, a reach-for-the-top buzzer, specialized reading intervention materials for teachers, and musical instruments!
This year, we have raised ~$3,300 from the walk-a-thon organized by Mrs. Norrie and we received a gracious donation of $5,000 from Crescent Point Energy thanks to the efforts of Mr. Jones.
This year, using proceeds from the Casino fundraiser, we have granted ~$24,000 in funding requests across the following approved uses:
- transportation for in Province field trips, band equipment, resource equipment for the library, Ipad/Ipods, trophy and award maintenance, sporting equipment, guest speakers
Please be a part of our pack!
Join our meetings, volunteer! Our next meeting is Jan 18, 2018 at 7:00 in the staff room. We have great fundraising plans for this year and we want your help!!!
Thank-you for all of your support.
Have a GREAT weekend, everyone!
