3W News Friday, October 27th, 2017 Day 4
Good Afternoon 3W Families,
Monday is Day 5.
Just a friend reminder to encourage your child to arrange playdates ahead of time. We are not able to call home to schedule playdates.
Please ensure your child has initials in his/her outdoor shoes. There are many cases of students wearing home the wrong shoes. If you have initials inside, it can help us solve the mysteries that occur!
Halloween: Tuesday is Halloween and students are invited to come to school in costume! We will have snacks provided as a part of our class party, but please still send a lunch. The cub cafe is open as well. We will have many activities happening that day!
Curriculum Update: We had our patterning math test today. We have another one next week. I prefer shorter tests/quizzes rather than super long ones! I often split our learning into a few different assessments. We will take a look at this during parent/teacher interviews.
We finished up (most of us!) our animal research reports for writing and science this week. This will be something we will show off at parent/teacher/student itnerviews. We also have been working to finish up our unit on mapping by completing a mapping performace task.
Our next unit in Social Studies is on Quality of Life and our Community. Our new unit in Science is on Rocks and Minerals. Please send your child with an egg carton if you have not done so yet or please send in extras for others to use if you have some around!
As we wrap up patterning in math, we are moving into place value and understanding/representing numbers up to 1,000.
Our next focus in writing is on sentence fluency and how we can extend our writing to be lengthier and have varied sentence starters/lengths.
I am busy reading with students one-on-one, however, we have now started our reading groups. Sometimes students see me for reading group and sometimes they may see another adult on our Grade 3 team. We change our groups often throughout the year and everyone is in a reading group! Together is better, so sharing and cross class grouping students is something that happens in Grade 3! Some students are reading picture books and some are reading chapter books. What we are busy with in our groups is always changing!
If you want sight word cards for home, please let me know and I am happy to provide these. It is helpful if studetns can read and spell sight words!
Morning Greeting: If your child signed up to be a morning greeter, they should be bringing home a schedule today. Please help them learn and remember when their shift is. They are to come see Ms. Hollingsworth, myself or Mrs. Casey to help clarify what door they are to be at if they are unsure.
Lost and Found: The lost and found is being bagged and donated this weekend. We took a walk by today and some students were able to find a few items.
Book Orders/ Book Fair:
November book orders for our class are due November 9 if you choose to order.
We have a book fair running in the learning commons/library from November 6-10.
Parent/Teacher/Student Interviews: Registration for parent/teacher/student conferences will be open October 25 at 9:00 am so please be sure to sign up so you are able to get a spot that works for your family. If you are new to the school and unsure of how to sign up, please touch base with the office. Conference times will be available for November 8th and 9th from 4:00-8:00pm (in 15 minute blocks). here is the link:
Christmas Concert UPDATE:
This year, the Elementary classes will perform their Christmas Concert on December 13 and 14, while Grade 6 – 9 Band Students will perform at their own Band Christmas Concert on December 7.
This change allows for families to attend at one start time each night, rather than split the families by alphabet as in previous years.
Thursday, December 7: Christmas Band Concert, Grades 6-9 Band Students
Wednesday, December 13, 7:00-8:30 PM: Westmount Christmas Concert 1 (Classes: 1P, 2N, 3S, 3E, 4M, 5H, 5N, and all Ms. New Kindergarten Students)
