Little Free Pantries Opening Ceremony

On June 21st 2017, two little free pantries are going to be installed. Theses little free pantries will be located in two spots: One near the Lions gate campsite entrance and the other will be at the fire hall on Milligan Drive. There is a third pantry and it’s location is still in development. Students at Westmount, the Food Bank volunteers, and the Okotoks Firefighters on Milligin drive, have all agreed to check the pantries. If you see any issues with it please contact Westmount School. The little free pantry was first made as a neighbours helping neighbors project to help out people who cannot afford or access everyday food items.

The pantries design has both a latch and a magnet. The magnet was included into the design incase somebody visiting the pantries forgot lock the latch. The roof of the little free pantries hang out a little so that when it rains ,the rain will run off the sides. Broadview Homes, The Okotoks Food Bank and the Okotoks Firefighters have all agreed to form a partnership with us. The Okotoks Food Bank will help us fill the pantries if they are empty and check on them, the Okotoks Firefighters will also help us check on the pantries. Finally Broadview homes has partnered with us to help with the design of the pantries.

The Little Free Pantries are important to our community because it helps families with low income remove stigma that is sometimes associated with going to the Food Bank and can give people the last ingredient to a recipe. To bring our community closer together, Okotoks citizens are encouraged to help stock the Little Free Pantries with any non- perishable food items they can spare.

Opening ceremony on June 21, at 10:30 am, Sheep River Location at the Lion’s Campground entrance. All welcome to attend!
