Grade 7-9 Musical Theatre

2017-18 WELCOME TO MUSICAL THEATRE - Ms. Jones

APRIL/ MAY UPDATE

Good afternoon Westmount Musical Theatre students, parents and guardians,
What an exciting time of year for our students as they head into their final month of preparation before our show commences. Time is moving quickly and we are only 25 days away from our crucial tech on-stage rehearsal (Sunday, May 27th - 2:30 - 8:30 pm).  I wanted to send this email to inform you all of a few pieces of important information:

1. Above, I have attached our May rehearsal and final show week schedule. Please click this word: CALENDAR LINK. I have also tried to copy and paste the calendar below this message. Please ensure to read through this calendar carefully as there are many important pieces to note during our performance week. Final performance dates are Wednesday, May 30th at 12:30 pm and 7:00 pm and Thursday, May 31st at 12:30 and 7:00 pm. All students are required to be at ALL 4 SHOWS as there are imperative full cast choral songs that require choreography with every student. Also, the double casted members will be very heavily responsible for the moving of stage props and set pieces throughout the production. Students have received their casts that they will be performing with and will receive their lead character presentation date (for when they are the performing character) by the end of this week.
3. Students are expected and reminded to be present to ALL rehearsals from this day forward as this is a crucial time of year for finalization of blocking and line cueing. Being present at rehearsals is imperative for the musical theatre team's success. Parents/guardians - if you could please encourage/assist students with the reviewing of their lines and cueing at home each night in order to help them be as prepared as possible for our final rehearsal week beginning Sunday May 27th that would be amazing! IF a student requires extra help, please have them come speak with myself or Ms. Johnston.
4. Regarding costumes; students have the option of utilizing pieces of costumes that I have in my musical theatre "tickle trunk" at school OR they are encouraged to utilize pieces of their own (potentially from their house, family, friends etc). Students are also welcome but not required to purchase any small pieces to their costumes that they would like to add. There is a small budget that I have for some important costume pieces that are difficult to find that I have purchased for this year's production as well (an example is the 1920's flapper dresses - this is hard to find piece). Students are expected to have their costume finalized and brought to school by next Friday, May 11th so they can begin to rehearse in their costume as often as possible.
5. Academic Balance: A reminder to students that balancing school work and extracurricular activities such as theatre is important and requires hard work and dedication. Parents and guardians, I would like you to know that students are receiving dedicated homework time during rehearsals whenever they are not on stage. Students are also reminded to make sure they have proactive conversations with all of their teachers by the end of next week (May 11th) to let them know that they will be missing some school during the May 28-31st week due to full cast on stage rehearsals and performances. Students will be provided with full catch up work periods in musical theatre for the next two weeks after their performances finish.

If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to send me an email!

Kind  regards,

MARCH UPDATE:

Our musical theatre students have continued to show such hard work and commitment throughout our rehearsal processes.

Students and parents, please make sure to frequently check in with the Rehearsal Schedule posted as this contains many of the important rehearsal dates, times and as well as some information regarding performance week.

Students have continued to work on their line memorization, characterization, choreography and choral work.

Our off script date has arrived! ALL students are to be fully memorized at this point in the year. (Steve's you are the exception here as you are getting closed to being fully memorized). We are going to continue to block Act Two into next week - hoping to be done before you take off for spring break!

If students need support with characterization and memorization, they are encouraged to come see Ms. Jones during a lunch hour to work on these items.

TARGETED OUTCOMES

I can…

  • Define the elements of script, dialogue, directions, characters and settings.
  • Demonstrate understanding of directions used in a script.
  • Read a script aloud.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the concept
of dramatic convention.
  • Demonstrate understanding of plot
structure.
  • Analyze a script to identify character,
setting and plot.

OCTOBER UPDATE:

We are very excited to be back for another great year with our musical theatre program at Westmount School! Students have had the opportunity to view and ask questions regarding musical theatre calendar and course outline on the second day of class so they know when our group practices/ outside of school commitments will begin. The calendar will be available to students and parents by the end of next week.

Throughout the month of September, our Musical Theatre Class will be working through the “Orientation” and levels, 1, 2 and 3 of the “Movement Discipline” of the Alberta Program of Studies.  Areas of focus include team building, body awareness, creative movement, mime and tableau.

Orientation Learning Targets: I can…

  • Demonstrate trust by becoming comfortable, physically and emotionally, with others.
  • Listen effectively.
  • Recognize the purposes of and participate in warm-up activities.
  • Show awareness of story sequence.

Movement Learning Targets: I can…

•Display clarity of movement and gesture.

•Use exaggerated movement and gesture.

•Communicate environment, character, and
situation non-verbally.

•Use contrast in movement.

•Create and sustain mood through
movement.

*Students will be given their very first summative Tableaux Assignment at the end of the month. Please stay tuned for the assignment and rubric to be posted!
